COURT OF APPEAL CONFERENCE: FCT MINISTER REAFFIRMS FCTA’S SUPPORT FOR THE JUDICIARY
FCT Minister, Barr Ezenwo Nyesom delivering his address at the End of Year Conference of the Court of Appeal Justices held in Abuja on Monday
1. The FCT Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT Administration to supporting the Judiciary.
2. Barr. Wike stated this on Monday, November 9, 2024, in a goodwill message to the Court of Appeal Justices Annual End-of-Year Conference, which had the theme “Judicial Introspection.”
3. The Minister said the Judiciary cannot work in isolation and requires the collaboration and support of all stakeholders, including the executive and legislative arms of government, the legal profession, and civil society.
4. He said, “As the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, I reaffirm our commitment to fostering such collaboration and providing the necessary support to ensure that the judiciary functions effectively.
5. “I assure Your Lordships that the FCT Administration is dedicated to creating an enabling environment for “justice not only to be done but to be seen to be done.” We are open to working closely with the judiciary to identify areas where improvements are necessary and implement solutions that will enhance justice delivery.

6. “This includes upgrading court facilities, providing modern equipment, and ensuring that the welfare of judicial officers and court staff is prioritized”.
7. Barr. Wike urged the court to continue exploring innovative approaches to justice delivery while expressing the hope that the conference would serve as a platform to discuss the challenges facing the legal profession and the opportunities to harness technology and other tools for the benefit of the judicial system and the public.
8. He implored the justices to use the platform the conference provides to recharge and prepare for the challenges of the coming year, adding that, “The road ahead may not be without obstacles, but with unity, determination, and a shared commitment to justice, I am confident that we will overcome them together”.
9. The Minister commended the Court of Appeal for its professionalism in the discharge of its duty.
10. He said, “The past year has been one of significant challenges and triumphs for the judiciary. Despite the increasing complexity of cases, the rising caseload, and the pressure to deliver justice swiftly, you have continued to discharge your duties with integrity, impartiality, and professionalism. For this, I commend you”.
11. Earlier in her welcome address, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, stressed the importance of the role of justices in the nation’s justice system, yet acknowledged that the Justices were only human and susceptible to making mistakes.
