FCT ADMINISTRATION URGES RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS TO PRIORITIZE SAFETY DURING PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES
Abuja, December 21. 2024 – The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims involved in the tragic stampede at a religious charity event in Maitama on December 21, 2024. This unfortunate incident resulted in several casualties, including ten (10) fatalities—six (6) adults and four (4) children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and we assure the public that all injured individuals are receiving adequate medical care at Maitama District Hospital.
Considering this tragedy, the FCTA strongly urges all religious organizations and philanthropic groups conducting charity programs during this festive season to adopt stringent safety measures to prevent similar occurrences. While we commend the generous spirit behind these acts of kindness, the safety and well-being of all participants must remain the highest priority.
To ensure the safe distribution of relief materials and prevent overcrowding, the FCTA recommends the following measures:
1. Use Organized Venues: Conduct distribution activities at venues capable of accommodating large crowds, with clear entry and exit points.
2. Engage Security Personnel: Employ trained security personnel or collaborate with local authorities to manage crowd control effectively.
3. Adopt a Queue System: Implement a structured and orderly process for distributing materials to avoid confusion and overcrowding.
4. Coordinate with Local Authorities: Inform local government officials about planned events to ensure proper support and oversight.
5. Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate beneficiaries about safety protocols, such as keeping order and avoiding rushes during distributions.
The FCTA will continue to work with religious and community organizations to promote safe and organized charitable activities during the festive period. We urge all stakeholders to cooperate with these guidelines to prevent further loss of life and injury.
Once again, we extend our deepest sympathies to the affected families and assure them of our continued support. The FCTA is committed to creating a safe and harmonious environment for all residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
For further inquiries or to report planned charitable activities, please contact the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or relevant local authorities. Signed,
